Ecomorph – Enlightenment 17 and Compiz Fusion effects

Ecomorph is a Compiz Fusion integration for Enlightenment 17.

Ecomorph is a Compiz Fusion integration for Enlightenment 17, providing truely spectacular graphics, alpha blending, and animation. This technology is definitely alpha quality however, and you may want to delay replacing your primary workstation configuration. This system I have it installed on is, a Pentium 4, 2.8 dual core, 2gb ram, and an NVidia 8600 GT with 512 mb ram, and it needs something similarly powerful to appreciate it. I have played with Compiz with Gnome, and it was pretty stable, and I suspect with a bit of time that Enlightenment and Compiz will make for a stable desktop too. Enlightenment has always boasted, in my mind, the best window management anywhere, and I have been using it exclusively since Enlightenment’s 0.16 initial release, and toying with it as far back as 0.14. And now with the effects, it is indeed the most powerful and the most impressive desktop environment anywhere.

Here’s a couple related links:

And here, ELiveCD, has an unstable release with Ecomorph/Compiz integrated.

This live CD will let you see this in all it’s glory for yourself, without effecting your PC. It does however run much better if installed, and a good personal configuration of all the available settings will do wonders for your enjoyment.

Holidays

I hope all had as good a holiday season as I had. Not that I had that much money to spend on others, but enough. I am thankful for my family. Here’s a couple seasonal pics of my people and me.

Amazing things using the Wiimote

This is pretty amazing tech, considering the very cheap hardware involved. The Wiimote is 40$, a DLink Bluetooth dongle 35$, & the parts to build an IR pen 5$. I have everything but the pen, and will be assembling it, and testing this capability. Expect an update, pics, or video of my progress sometime soon. This will make my 22″ Samsung monitor as awesome as the 7 or 800$ touchscreen displays. However the coolest capability would be a projector hanging above the coffee table, or an LCD TV embedded in my table, what an awesome orbiter for my LinuxMCE setup. There are many more YouTube videos on the subject, and many unique projects centered around the Wiimote. I have my Wiimote controlling my LinuxMCE interface, and it works well, and makes a nice and cheap gyration device. I am very excited about where this can go.

Site update…

I have updated the Wordpress here to from 2.3.3 that had been here for some time, to 2.7.  This was a fairly exhaustive upgrade, as it is the first time I’ve upgraded an inplace Wordpress site, since I began using this CMS.  Also, my plugins had to be updated as well.  It did go very well, and took less than an hour including backing up the existing site.

I had not been posting recently, as I was anticipating this upgrade…  or dreading it.  However, it’s now complete and ready for me to begin posting again.

30!!!

I can’t believe I even made it to 30, let alone so damn quickly! :) Ah well, actually I like getting older, it makes sense to me, and has some finality in it all. So tomorrow’s the day, 30 years old in like 11 hours now…

So, I’m really thinking I should do something with the next decade. I’d say many feel this way. 30 is indeed a gateway age, a passing from excuse of youth, into no excuse, one should be old enough to know… something. I don’t really feel like I know so much anymore. I feel like the further I go along, the more doubts, the more inconclusion, the more likely it becomes that no one can figure much out.

On the subject of figuring stuff out, I watched a recent movie last night, The Oxford Murders. It’s a movie about mathematician studies at Oxford university. About how math can play a role in deciphering life at times. And about how it can be shown that no truth can be known, no information can be divided until what’s left is fact, it just can’t be known, can’t be figured out. No truth exists outside of mathematics.

I buy that. I know no truth. I have conjectures about life and times, but I can gain no conclusion of anything. If turning 30 is life realizing at all, it’s the nail that ends my pursuit of futile truths.

Barak Obama’s made the Democratic nomination!

Barak Obama has secured the nominations necessary for the Democratic Party’s nomination. I’m excited to see that. It has been a tough run on Hillary’s part. There is talk of her biding for the vice presidential seat. I thought she’d never accept such a post, she was so proud in her run, which I think hurt. Barak’s humility makes him appealing to many that are tired of the proud, we’ll do it my way, prevailing Washingtonian mentality. I’d be proud to have her as vice on the ticket I’m endorsing. So get prepared to vote, and vote! Either way, make your voice heard, make your opinion count. We all have one, I hear everyone bitching about the things that matter here, about our country, it’s direction (or lack thereof), the Washington rhetoric, all that. Form an opinion, based on available facts, and vote!

My LinuxMCE setup

I’ve been playing with LinuxMCE lately. And am finally satisfied with it’s progress as a platform, and in my understanding of it, to replace my MythTV only media center. And I thought I’d share a few pics with you of it’s look.

Currently it is using an underpowered for it’s use video card, an Intel chipset, that only allows for masking, not alpha blending, or the menus you see would be transparent. I’ll upload some pics of it in all it’s transparent glory shortly, when my new NVidia 8500 HDMI video card comes in. For my fellow geeks, check that video card out, HDMI output, passive cooled, perfect for a media center.

10 stunning ultra-geeky home cinemas

These are pretty cool, in a geeky way.  But a nice idea, themed rooms, especially, themed theaters…  I would want something other than Star Trek or something so geeky.  As a couple of the guys from Revision3 stated, that a Star Trek room is not real appealing to bring a date home too.  :)

Barack Obama for President!

Are you interested in the ‘08 Presidential race? You should be! So much is at stake. We are at war everywhere, unemployment is at a recent high, a recession is so obvious that the govn. is giving us extra money! Now you know something is bad when that happens…

I’m Barack Obama all the way to the White House! Obama speaks of a government of “common sense, common purpose, common sacrifice, and common prosperity.” I love it, I see Barack Obama as the best candidate for change, best candidate for all us regular Americans, since John F. Kennedy. He’s young, alert, and in play for a better America.

Let me encourage you all to pay attention, form an opinion, and VOTE! And tonight at 8pm EST there’s a Democratic Party debate in Austin, TX, watch it.

Check out and keep up with the race for the Presidency at CNN’s Election Center.
